The film works best during its (too-brief) getting-to-know-you section, which balances humor against snarly danger. The kid survives the ordeal, though, and, left alone in the wild, comes to befriend a relatively sweet-natured wolf that he muzzles and nurses back to health-a first for interspecies relations, it’s implied. But after Keda is flung off a high ledge by a charging buffalo, his tribe assumes the worst. Teenage Keda ( The Road’s Kodi Smit-McPhee, maturing into a forceful silent presence) has a stern but loving father to impress: Hunting the Great Beast is a rite of passage that’s arrived for him. Evidently, facts aren’t terribly important here (even the movie’s title comes from a civilization that’s still millennia away), but if you can get past that, there’s a moderately gripping tale of survival and natural kinship to be had, one in the long-forgotten vein of 1983’s Never Cry Wolf. All Rights Reserved. It may surprise you to learn that the denizens of “Europe, 20,000 years ago”-as the prehistoric adventure Alpha situates us-rocked some beautifully tailored fur-lined parkas and cozy boots that look a lot like Uggs. As Keda’s momentous journey back to his tribe strengthens each of these wounded souls, they become each other’s rescuer, family, and salvation. They become reliant on one another to survive: hunting, eating, resting and even playing together. Eventually they actually begin to trust each other. Over time, Keda and Alpha stop seeing themselves as potential enemies and they begin to tolerate one another. “They’d put him in the car and take him to the dog show,” says Forbes, “so he’d become socialised, which was great for us, because it meant we were starting far above zero.” The other wolf dogs in the pack came from Spain and the Orkney Islands in Scotland. Head animal trainer Mark Forbes hit the jackpot when in France he found five-year-old Chuck, a show dog who was also used for breeding. The breed isn’t common, but it is recognised in Europe and is a show category. Wolf dogs were created by the Czech army in the 1950s and are a cross between a German Shepherd and a Carpathian wolf. So, the filmmakers used the Czech wolf dog, which is the closest-looking to a wolf, and the most trainable. The director, Albert Hughes wanted to film as much as possible in live, real terms, with genuine animals and on actual locations. What type of animal was the ‘wolf’ in the film?

He cautiously heals the wolf’s wound, and in his isolation comes to depend on the creature’s risky, unpredictable companionship. But instead of killing it, Keda carries the wolf to a cave where they take shelter. In his defense, he seriously wounds the Alpha wolf, which the distraught pack abandons. Keda is not yet up to the task, however, and his fear leads to him being injured and left for dead in a wilderness along way from home…Īll about Alpha (the wolf): At Keda’s most vulnerable, he is attacked by a pack of wolves. They embark on the annual bison hunt, the success of which is essential if they are to have enough food for the winter. The isolation was extreme, and bonds of family and community were essential for survival. Keda leaves the safety of his village for the first time, alongside his father Tau and other members of the tribe. Winters were brutal and lasted nine months and dangerous predators roamed the unpopulated landscapes in search of food. During this time, most of Europe was uninhabitable and covered in ice 3km-deep. The special connection, between a boy and a wolf, is the incredible story that is ALPHA.Īll about Keda (the boy): Seventeen-year-old is a Solutrean, part of a creative, resourceful Cro-Magnon tribe living at the end of the last Ice Age in the area we know as southern France and Spain. They come across dangerous situations and defy the odds to find their way home before winter arrives. The boy and the wolf learn to rely on each other and become unlikely friends. To help him along the way, he tames a lone wolf, Alpha, abandoned by its pack.
